Sligo Mayo Greenway - A new opportunity for the West of Ireland
Dissused railway lines are ideal routes to use as Greenways, usually still in public ownership there are less issues about rights of way and rights of access points for walkers and cyclists.
The organisation Sustrans has been the main driver of the development of different types of greenways in the UK and their website www.sustrans.org.uk is well worth looking at for anyone interested in this subject. Sustrans have produced a very clear concise guide to greenways available at this link: http://www.sustransconnect2.org.uk/r...elines%206.pdf
There is huge potential for a network of greenways throughout Ireland to be interconnected and provide a safe national greenways network.
The rail line from Claremorris to Collooney runs through the towns of Kiltimagh, Swinford, Charlestown, Tubercurry, Coolaney and Collooney. A greenway linking these towns with a safe walking and cycling environment, would add value for tourists and residents. Imagine parents with toddlers in buggies, small children cycling in safety, runners on a jog - and no onenot having to watch out for cars, lorries and buses round the corner.
The Sligo Mayo Greenway? A new opportunity for the West of Ireland?
The Sligo Mayo Greenway does not yet exist.
This Website has been developed to open up the debate as to it's potential.
The proposal is very simple.
From Claremorris in County Mayo in the West of Ireland to Collooney in County Sligo along the alignment of a rail line closed down over 30 years ago there exists an opportunity to have a first class tourist and leisure facility in the form of a "greenway".
A greenway is essentially a paved walking and cycling track which is segregated from vehicle traffic. This 47 mile greenway would be the longest in Ireland and would massively benefit the tourist trade of Sligo and Mayo. This idea needs to be supported by local people to get the project moving, to find out more please contact us by email.
